Social support in feeling- and problem-based coping


Different people need and want different amounts of social support but the right levels of support can be very helpful. Having people you can talk to, who are kind and understanding, who can help with practical steps is a great way to reduce stress!

But relying too much on people can push them away and make them feel tired and upset. It can also lower your confidence in being able to deal with something yourself. On the other hand, some people may be “overly” helpful, resulting in more stress.

As we can see, different events may require different types of coping. So it is important to understand when your coping is helpful/unhelpful. Do you have a style that you cling on or can you be flexible?
