Key takeaway

Stress is the response we feel in situations where the demands on us are more than we can cope with.

The amount of stress you feel depends on whether you think the situation is a problem (primary appraisal) and whether you think you can cope with it (secondary appraisal). Stress can be made worse when you feel helpless and out of control.

Stress can harm our bodies, especially if it is frequent and long lasting. Coping with stress is associated with personality styles that are confident and optimistic, all of which can be learnt.

Next session, we will look at how thinking affects your stress and knowing your signs of stress.
